Reasons Why Tennessee Marijuana Legalization Should Be Done

By Allyson Burke

Tennessee residents do not have to ask why marijuana should be legalized. The burden lies on the government to explain why this should not be the case, given that none of the explanations for its prohibition are convincing. However, as long as people have to cope with the reality of cannabis laws, they can present a strong repeal case. This article examines why Tennessee marijuana legalization should be done.

The fact that cannabis is illegal makes it even more appealing that it would were it legal. It gives adolescents the opportunity to make quick money through selling it to peers and friends. If the excessive profits gotten from selling the drug were to be ended through legalization, teenagers would not have any incentive to sell it. A legal market for cannabis that is regulated would decrease its sale and use among adolescents.

Cannabis is not a destructive drug, at least when compared to others such as tobacco and alcohol. Scientific facts have proven that it is not toxic to human beings, and almost impossible to overdose on it. Additionally, its addictive levels are much lower than that of alcohol and tobacco. It is therefore unfair and unjust for users to be treated more harshly than those who take other drugs.

Illegality of marijuana is increasingly being justified by use of selective scientific distortions and records. This is harmful to the credibility of teachers, law enforcement officers and scientists in Tennessee. The perceived dangers that result from its use are exaggerated out of context, with the predictions of mental instability not having any support from modern scientific facts. Most of the claims about the drugs perils are based on old prejudices put up when science had no idea how its effects come by.

Cannabinoid receptor systems were discovered during the late 1980s, and since then the dangers associated with the drug has not received approval from modern research. It is true that marijuana, cigarettes and beer are definitely not for kids. By contrast, over time adults have proven that if taken moderately, cannabis has no impact that can be considered harmful to the user or his or her society.

Use of cannabis has positive attributes, like as a recreational drug having mild side effects and its medicinal value. Most people use it because they know what is good for them, especially those suffering from various serious ailments. It provides relief from nausea, pain, spasticity, and other symptoms that have not been successfully treated with convectional medications.

Many Tennessee adults prefer cannabis over alcohol as a moderate and mild way of relaxing. They use it as they choose to, with the reason for the choice being their personal observation that the drug has mild side effects and quite low dependence liability. Most users develop tolerance to its side effects, while those who cannot choose to quit.

Cannabis use is as a result of informed consent in which users conclude that the benefits they get from its use outweigh the risks by far. For most residents of Tennessee, perhaps the biggest risk of taking cannabis is the low probability of getting arrested.

Users have not backed down from their Tennessee marijuana legalization campaign, in spite of the assorted punishments. Their determination is driven by a quest for justice and knowledge of society's fundamental values.
